Skew-whiff (AKA drummer Michael Daly) is a regular DJ at Smash Palace on High Street. He plays an assortment of 7” 45s and 12” singles and LP album tracks with an emphasis on infectious beats and rhythms, always striving to create an atmosphere, good vibes and a sense of FLOW.

Art Workshops

The Magic of Watercolour by Neela Curran

An inspiring demonstration of key watercolour techniques with easy to understand explanations of the processes being shown. You will see how paper, pigments and water can create exciting effects and then can have a go yourself, as paints, brushes and paper are all supplied for you. Neela Curran is an international award winning artist, who has featured on Australian television and in newspapers and magazines for several years, and originally launched her concept of “Lazy Sundays Watercolour Workshops” to encourage and support people to take their first steps towards their own respective artistic journeys. Whilst working in the human services sector, she introduced art into various programs, for people dealing with mental and physical disabilities, as well as in drug and alcohol rehabs and clients of the Department of Corrections. Her easy-going, relaxed but informative style of teaching has already made her a popular tutor, since moving to settle in the Canterbury region four years ago from Australia. Art Workshop: Zentangle – One Stroke at a Time

Draw patterns using the Zentangle Method. With its roots in calligraphy meditation and repetition, using simple tools and structure, it encourages you to bring deliberate focus and attention to the line you are drawing. With basic strokes, it is easy to reach a calm rhythm. The technique is suitable for children, novices and seasoned artists alike, a method of building complex images from the repetition of simple patterns. Applied carefully, Zentangle yields an impressively elaborate finished product composed of a few pen strokes.

Ildica Boyd has a passion for patterns – whether in fabric, on paper or with other mediums. “I’ve always loved the look of wandering lines or patterns, colours and shapes. I have taught weaving and zentangle for many years and love to watch others grow; and Zentangle is such a lovely medium to creatively blossom with a pen and a positive outlook.”

Duration: 4 hours
Location: outside, covered
Admittance: 10 spaces at a time for visitors of all ages.

There is a hononga with Pounamu which enables us to authentically connect, to each other, to ourselves and our personal narratives. Take part in the Arts Mural

Get ‘hands-on’ and paint a mural on the gallery’s kiln shed with the guidance of artist Kate McIntyre. All ages and experience levels are welcomed. The painting will be fun and abstract in nature, using hands, brushes, sticks and sponges to create textures, and once completed it will reflect an element of our local environment!

Please note that this workshop will be a bit messy, however we will provide some painting clothes for participants to wear.

Kate’s practice leads her to pursue stories, beauties, truths, and distress calls in her surroundings. She nurtures this connection with her environment through tedious processes and laborious tasks; growing, foraging, processing and repurposing materials for use in her work. Ecological respect and resourcefulness echo throughout her life, and she is often fascinated in the zone where nature and human intervention meet and how they intertwine.

Demonstration of paint-making from natural sources

Watch artist Celia Wilson making and using paints from local rocks and plants. Celia will demonstrate how to grind rock into pigment powder and then show how paint is made, with emphasis on watercolour and oil paint. She will test the paints made on paper and may allow you to have a go yourself!

Celia Wilson is a local mixed media artist who is using local rock pigments and colours from plants.

“This interest in pigments started when researching my subject – an eroding hillside, and I realised the colours revealed could be used to make paint. Having worked at setting up and running a certified organic orchard in Paparimu near Hunua, south of Auckland, sustainability and environmental concern played a big part in my choice to use local rock and plant pigments. While I find rock beside road cuttings and on rivers and beaches, I feel quite aware that this is not a never-ending resource. You only need a small pebble, size of a walnut shell, and a tablespoon of ground pigment to give a few years supply of watercolour paint. Even the binder ingredients can be sourced in New Zealand”.
