Last week the Oxford Gallery team was wrapped to receive this incredible painting by John Gibb (1831-1909), titled Growing Gold, 1892. Oil on linen canvas.
Donated by Mary Stronach Stratton (nee Paterson), granddaughter of Alexander Stronach Paterson, who purchased the artwork from the artist. The painting is gifted to Oxford Arts Trust of Oxford Gallery Toi o Waimakariri.
The family taonga was presented to us by Tony Stratton who shared some family history about the artwork. Thanks to patron Philip Trusttum and our volunteer team for joining us for the auspicious occasion.
Growing Gold will be on display for several weeks and has already ignited conversations about the exact spot it was painted from. Come and see for yourself; we’d love to know your take on it! Do you know where the painter composed this work?
